What can go wrong.
Read this before you deposit anything. The properties that make this service useful are the same ones that make mistakes permanent.
There is no undo
Once you generate an address, the recipient and unlock time are compiled into a Bitcoin script. They cannot be edited or cancelled by you, by VaultUntil, or by anyone else. If you enter the wrong recipient address, the coins will be delivered to it as instructed.
You cannot access your coins early
Not in an emergency, not by asking support, not for any reason. The Bitcoin network rejects any attempt to spend before the unlock time. This is the service working correctly, not a failure.
We hold the key that releases the payout
The timelock is enforced by the network, so nobody can move your coins early. But when it expires, the key that signs the payout is ours. You are trusting VaultUntil to send to the recipient you specified, and to still exist on that date. A long lock is a long bet on us.
Network fees are unpredictable
The mining fee is charged when your payout is sent, at whatever rate applies that day. Over a long lock this can move a great deal. If congestion makes a small transfer uneconomic to deliver, we will contact you about a refund rather than send a payout that costs more than it is worth.
Your email is your account
Anyone with access to your inbox can sign in. They cannot move locked coins early or change where a transfer is going — both are fixed on-chain — but they can see your activity and schedule new transfers. Secure your email.
This is not financial advice or a regulated deposit
VaultUntil is not a bank. Funds held here are not covered by any deposit guarantee scheme. Bitcoin's value can fall as easily as it can rise, and a timelock means you cannot react to either.
